The Finger Mechanic That Will Double Your Smash Power
Why Your Smash Isn't Getting Any Stronger
If you've been playing badminton for a while and your smash still feels weak, it's almost never about strength. It's about technique β specifically, one mechanic most coaches never explain clearly. The secret is in your fingers.
The Problem: Smashing With Your Arm
When most recreational players smash, they use a big arm swing and hope for the best. This leaves most of your power on the table. Professional players generate smash speed through a rapid snap of the wrist and fingers at the point of contact, not through the swing itself.
The Finger Mechanic Explained
- Start with a loose grip β Relaxed as you bring the racket back. Tension kills power.
- Tighten at impact only β Fingers rapidly tighten around the grip as the racket head accelerates. This is the snap.
- Index finger leads β Slightly separated from the others. This is your power lever.
- Follow through down β Let the racket continue across your body after contact.
The Drill
Without a shuttle, practise the snap motion 20 times slowly. Feel the difference between a loose grip and the moment of tightening. Do this for two weeks before your next match.
