5 Footwork Mistakes That Are Costing You Points
Why Footwork Matters More Than You Think
Most players focus on shots. They want a better smash, a deceptive drop, a tighter net cord. But footwork is the engine underneath all of that. If you arrive late to the shuttle, every shot suffers β regardless of how good your technique is.
Here are the 5 footwork mistakes I see most often when coaching players of all levels.
Mistake 1: Not Using a Split Step
The split step is a small jump you take just as your opponent strikes the shuttle. It keeps you light on your feet and ready to move in any direction. Without it, you're flat-footed and always a step behind.
Fix: Before each opponent's shot, bounce lightly on the balls of your feet. Time the split step to coincide with their swing.
Mistake 2: Crossing Your Feet
When moving to the side or rear court, players often cross their feet over each other. This slows you down and throws off your balance.
Fix: Use chassΓ© steps (side-steps) for short distances. Only use crossover steps for long distances to the rear corners.
Mistake 3: Not Returning to Centre
After every shot, your base position is the centre of the court. Many players don't recover fast enough, leaving huge gaps for opponents to exploit.
Fix: After every shot β every single one β take one or two recovery steps back toward centre before the shuttle lands on the other side.
Mistake 4: Watching the Shuttle, Not the Opponent
Your eyes should be on your opponent's racket and body, not the shuttle. Their body tells you where the shuttle is going before they hit it.
Fix: In training, consciously focus on your opponent's hitting arm and shoulder angle. With practice this becomes automatic.
Mistake 5: Heavy Heels
Players who land on their heels are slow and injury-prone. Badminton movement is done on the balls of your feet β always.
Fix: During footwork drills, exaggerate staying on the balls of your feet. Check in on yourself during matches when you feel slow.
The 5-Minute Footwork Drill
Set up 4 cones in the 4 corners of a half court. Start in the centre. Move to each cone and back, in a random order, for 5 minutes. Focus on split step, recovery, and staying on your toes throughout. Do this three times a week.
